What Roman silk is

Roman silk is a trade name from India's ethnic-wear markets for a structured, silk-feel ground with a fine horizontal rib. The texture is woven, not printed or embossed — run a nail across the cloth and you feel the weave itself.

It sits at the formal end of the catalogue. Where mul Chanderi is a soft occasion ground, Roman silk is the backbone of ceremony lines — anarkalis, structured suit sets and festive kurtas that need body and line rather than float.

In our catalogue the family appears as Roman silk, Roman Shimmer and Roman Glass variants — they differ in sheen and surface, but the structured fall and the woven rib are common to all of them.

Drape and hand-feel

Structured and formal. Roman silk holds volume — an anarkali keeps its flare, a straight suit keeps its line — which is why ceremony silhouettes are cut on it rather than on soft grounds.

It creases less than chiffon or georgette. A packed Roman silk piece comes out of the box presentable, a detail your delivery QC will notice before your customers do.

The rib catches light quietly and photographs well — useful for lookbooks, marketplace listings and the product shots that sell the piece before it ships.

Care — what to tell your customers

Ceremony lines usually carry embroidery, so dry cleaning is the safe instruction; a steam refresh between wears restores the fall without a press.

When ironing is needed: medium heat with a pressing cloth between iron and rib. Hang on padded hangers — the structure holds, but the surface deserves it.

Buying Roman silk in bulk

A firm ground carries weight, presses crisp and survives the box — the practical reasons ceremony programmes run on Roman silk:

Sampling is a standard first step for new trade partners — a cut of the ground with the season's shade bank travels with the quotation.

The three questions buyers ask about roman silk

Plain answers — the full trade FAQ is on the FAQ page.

What is the minimum order for a Roman silk line?

24 pieces to start — 3 colours × 2 sets, each set one size run of L, XL, XXL and 3XL, applied per line. Ceremony programmes usually add replenishment lots of 120 pieces per design per colour once the line proves on the shelf.

Roman silk or mul Chanderi — which should my shelf carry?

Both, if the shelf serves two occasions: chanderi for the light, breathable, everyday-festive trade; Roman silk for ceremony and structured festive wear that must hold volume and arrive crisp. The two grounds complement rather than compete.

Does Roman silk crush in freight?

Far less than chiffon or georgette — the rib and the body of the ground resist creasing, and pieces pack flat. Export consignments unbox close to presentable; a quick steam restores the fall where needed.
