What mul Chanderi is

Chanderi is a weaving town in Madhya Pradesh whose looms have supplied fine cloth to Indian courts and mercantile houses for centuries. Classic Chanderi cloth is a silk-and-cotton ground — silk for sheen and strength, cotton for breathability — woven thin enough to stay sheer and featherweight.

The "mul" in mul Chanderi is the trade's word for the soft, muslin-like hand. It is the plain, soft-finished Chanderi ground that embroidery ateliers reach for when a design calls for cutwork, scalloped edges and fine threadwork rather than heavy zardozi. At DHANYA it is the house signature — the ground behind our scalloped suit sets, cutwork kurta sets, pleated bodices and pearl-drop yokes.

On the catalogue it appears as Mul Chanderi and Mul Chanderi silk, usually named with its colourway — maroon, sage green, lavender, teal. The colourway is part of the line's identity: each design ships in its own bank of three to four shades.

Drape and hand-feel

Mul Chanderi falls soft and fluid, with a quiet sheen rather than a shine. It moves with the wearer — anarkali flare, pleated bodice and dupatta float all read beautifully on it, which is why our light occasion lines favour it.

It breathes. In Indian summers and humid export markets alike, that breathability is why boutiques keep chanderi lines on the shelf across the long season rather than rotating them out with the weather.

Because the ground is light, silhouette weight stays low: an embroidered chanderi suit still packs and ships like a light garment, not a heavy one — a small fact that matters at freight time.

Care — what to tell your customers

Embroidered pieces should be dry cleaned; plain grounds take a cold, gentle hand wash. That is standard care for finished chanderi and worth printing on your care labels.

Iron on low, on the reverse, around the embroidery. Store folded in muslin rather than on rough hangers — the sheer ground snags on hooks and Velcro.

The three questions buyers ask about mul chanderi

Plain answers — the full trade FAQ is on the FAQ page.

What is the minimum order for a mul Chanderi line?

24 pieces to start — 3 colours × 2 sets, each set one size run of L, XL, XXL and 3XL. The entry applies per line, so a boutique can open with two lines at 48 pieces total. Replenishment production lots run 120 pieces per design per colour.

Is mul Chanderi right for a summer-heavy boutique?

Yes — the silk-cotton ground breathes through peak heat, which is exactly why it reorders well in the long season. Embroidered and scalloped versions extend the same lines into festive and occasion trade without changing fabric.

How do repeat orders stay the same shade?

Dyeing is lot-consistent with lab-dip approvals, and your original order's shade bank is retained. Send the repeat against your first quotation and the mill matches the bank rather than starting a fresh dye lot.
